UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Extension Dairy Team’s mobile app DairyCents is now available for download on Android devices. DairyCents has been available since August on iTunes and has more than 600 registered users to date.
“We have received quite a few requests for the Android compatible version of DairyCents. We are very excited to have this now available to reach even more users” said Virginia Ishler, one of the creators of the app and a Dairy Team member.
Users from 44 states have been using the app and downloading feed prices for more than 40 of the 90 feeds available in the database. Dairy producers so far have been the biggest user of the app, accounting for more than half of the downloads.
The first feature of the DairyCents App is a standardized Income Over Feed Cost, or IOFC, calculation using the user’s state specific milk and alfalfa prices, and corn and soybean meal prices from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
The standardized IOFC can be calculated for either 65, 75, or 85 pounds of milk production per cow per day, and the results are given on both a per hundredweight or per cow basis.
DairyCents will also graph IOFC, feed cost and milk price starting from January 2012.
The second feature of Dairy Cents allows users to compare their purchased feed price with the Penn State Feed Price List and to other users in the database who have purchased the same feed.
This section of the app allows the user to track over time how prices of select ingredients are trending.
