HARRISBURG, Pa. — Exhibitors and visitors of the 2013 Pennsylvania Farm Show will learn more about agriculture thanks to the newly formed Friends of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Foundation Inc.

A 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, the foundation was designed to further the educational mission of the annual show, set for Jan. 5-12, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.

“The foundation was developed to support this show that brings awareness of Pennsylvania’s No. 1 industry — agriculture — to its nearly half million visitors,” said Bill Piper of Carlisle, Pa., the foundation’s chairman. “As the show has shifted to primarily a consumer event, we can showcase the important role our farmers play in their everyday lives.”

Some events the foundation supports include the Farm Show Detectives, which features 28 learning stations throughout the complex, geared toward elementary school children.

Arena events include the antique tractor display and pull, the Equine Showcase and a dog demonstration, as well as the FFA Ag Career Connections, which features student videos and displays and is also sponsored by Lancaster Farming.

The foundation also supports the Pennsylvania High School Rodeo and state Sen. Michael Waugh’s Celebrity Draft Horse Hitch Drive, set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Rounding out the foundation’s board of directors Michael Firestine of Womelsdorf, vice chairman; Beverly Gruber of New Tripoli; Michael Brammer of Harrisburg; Bill Burgess, general manager of Lancaster Farming, Ephrata; Donald Hoover of Lititz; Linda Spahr of York; and Waugh of Glen Rock.
