4-H’ers Compete for Showmanship Titles

TIMONIUM, Md. — 4-H’ers from across the state tested their fitting and showing skills in a daylong competition Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Maryland State Fair.

Judges selected age winners, breed winners and overall winners based on the skills and knowledge the youth possessed about their dairy cattle, as well as their showring preparation skills and how the animals were presented in the ring.

Kayla Umbel was the winner of the 14-year-old Holstein showmanship class and went on to win the Holstein championship as well as the overall champion fitting and showing title.

Winning the Dean’s Challenge of past showmanship winners was Alexis Winkler with her Ayrshire. The contest was sponsored by Dean Cheng-I Wei of the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

In the Ayrshire ring, the senior and overall champion was Garret Buckmeier. The junior winner was Alexandra Miller, while Cassandra Plummer took the top spot in the intermediate class.

Alex Beard was the senior and overall champion in the Brown Swiss competition. Joseph Hubbard was the junior winner and Joshua Hubbard took first in the intermediate class.

In Guernsey showmanship, Tabitha Jacobs was the senior and overall champion. Top junior honors went to Zachary Spurrier and Tessie Weant was the intermediate class blue ribbon winner.

Jersey showmanship top honors went to Patrick Youse, who was also the senior winner. The junior class winner was Augustus Clark and in the intermediate ring, Madison Spurrier took first place.

Haley Wilson was the senior and overall champion of the Milking Shorthorn showmanship competition. Robert Hahn topped the intermediate class.

In the Red and White Holstein ring, Courtney Hoff won the senior class and took the champion title. Atley Miller was the junior winner and Dylan Hill was first in the intermediate competition.

Holstein age class winners were as follows: Bryce Zepp, 8-year-olds; Colin Ehrhardt, 9-year-olds; Eric Smith, 10-year-olds; Jordyn Griffin, 11-year-olds; Miranda Iager, 12-year-olds; Jared Schrader, 13-year-olds; Kayla Umbel, 14-year-olds; Katelyn Allen, 15-year-olds; Alison Ferver, 16-year-olds; Renee Wilson, 17- to 18-year-olds
