HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex is a flurry of activity as organizers prepare for what has been billed as the largest national dairy show in the country. Dairy cattle will begin arriving Thursday to prepare for the weekend shows.

The 49th annual All-American Dairy Show will open next Saturday with the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show and run through Sept. 20.

Show manager Jim Sharp says numbers look very good for the 2012 edition.

“We are down, but not down much. We are off by less than 5 percent. For everything going on in the industry right now with what these dairymen are facing, I was tickled on how strong the numbers are,” he said.

More than 2,400 head of dairy cattle are scheduled to walk across the tanbark in at least one of the several shows happening during the course of the week. Sharp said that more than 900 youths will participate in the Premier National Junior Dairy Shows next Monday.

“It’s exciting to bring attention to Pennsylvania’s dairy industry and recognize our youth, who are top priorities for show staff and volunteers,” Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary George Greig said in a written statement.

For those unable to attend the shows, select events be broadcast live online at www.LancasterFarming.com.

They include the Premier National Junior Holstein Show at 8 a.m. Sept. 17, Pennsylvania Fall Championship Holstein Show at 9 a.m. Sept. 18, the Guernsey Show at 9 a.m. Sept 19, Red and White Show at 11:30 a.m. Sept 19, Holstein and Jersey heifers at 1 p.m Sept 19, and Holstein and Jersey cows at 9 a.m. Sept. 20.

Sharp also noted the adjustments in the schedule to improve the exhibitor experience. For example, the youth show opening ceremonies will be on Sept. 16, allowing the youths to enjoy the event and still be ready to show the next morning.

Youth activity days kick off next Saturday. Highlights include the selection of the youth supreme champion on Sept. 17, Youth Showmanship Contest on Sept. 16, and several dairy youth contests.

The show will culminate with the selection of the supreme champion of the open show on Thursday Sept. 20 in the Large Arena at the conclusion of the Holstein and Jersey shows.

Sharp joked that while the 49th is this year, excitement is building for the 50th show next year.

“We have one foot in this year’s show and (we are) looking ahead at next year’s show,” he said.
