TIMONIUM, Md. — Savage-Leigh Leona, a Holstein aged cow owned by Chip Savage of Savage-Leigh Farm in Union Bridge, was honored as the open supreme champion senior dairy female at the Maryland State Fair Friday, Aug. 31.
Judge Steve Wagner commended her for her extreme openness in the front when selecting her as the winner.
The open supreme champion junior dairy female banner was presented to the Red and White champion, a fall yearling, Whitdale D Hvezda Sky-Red. The winning entry was by Chris and Jen Hill, Richard Green and Chad Umbel of Thurmont.
“She’s a heifer that wows you with size, scale and frame,” said Judge Matt Lawrence.
Contenders in the ring for the supreme senior and junior champion titles came from the seven breed shows held over several days in the Cow Palace at the fairgrounds.
In the open Ayrshire show, senior and grand champion honors went to Vales-Pride Santiago Eden, the 4-year-old exhibited by Michael and Mark Valentine of Vales-Pride Farm, Emmitsburg. Reserve senior and reserve grand champion was Vales-Pride Soldier Exhale, the aged cow exhibited by Mark and Jess Valentine of Thurmont.
Junior champion of the Ayrshire show was exhibited by Palmyra Farm, Edmund Els, Ragimore Trust and Barti Volschenk of Hagerstown. The winner was Palmyra-Ragimore-EV B Gigi, a summer yearling. Reserve champion was the spring yearling, Vales-Pride Reality Odeilia, exhibited by Michael and Denise Valentine of Vales-Pride Farm.
The Brown Swiss open class grand and senior champion was Old Mill Starsky Love-ET, the junior 3-year-old exhibited by Allen and Tammy Bassler of Old Mill Farm in Upperville, Va. Reserve senior and reserve grand champion honors went to Pine-Croft Precise Eunice, the four-year-old exhibited by Cassidy Schirmer of Pampered Acres in Galena.
Jen and Chris Hill, Kathy Whitman and Garrion Brothers, Thurmont, exhibited the junior champion of the show, fall yearling Hills Valley Legacy Fly-ET, and Cameron Mullinix of Union Bridge had the reserve junior champion, DSKM Legacy Frita, a winter yearling.
Allen and Tammy Bassler were named the premier breeders of the show, while Cassidy Schirmer was the premier exhibitor banner winner.
In the Guernsey ring, the senior and grand champion banner was awarded to Kevin and Dina Stoltzfus of Warwick Manor Farm in East Earl, Pa., for their senior 2-year-old entry, Warwick Manor Cases Silk. Logan Derickson of Pare-View in Middletown, Del., exhibited the reserve senior and reserve grand champion, Millborne Fame Pixels Pixie, a senior 3-year-old.
The Stoltzfuses also exhibited the junior champion, winter yearling heifer Warwick Manor Jester Cookie. Pam Moser of Walnut Ridge Farm in Middletown had the reserve junior champion winner, spring yearling heifer Walnut Ridge Frank Skitter.
In addition to Savage-Leigh Leona-ET, the aged cow exhibited by Chip Savage, taking the senior and grand champion title of the open Holstein show, Ladys Manor Ruby F Geri-ET was the reserve senior and reserve grand champion. The 5-year-old was exhibited by Mary Smith and My Ladys Manor Farm in Monkton.
Arethusa Goldwyn Mona Lisa, a spring yearling heifer, was the junior champion Holstein. She was exhibited by Kevin Ehrhardt and Gene Iager of Baldwin. The reserve junior champion rosette was awarded to Ehrhardt and Iager for their fall yearling heifer, Kingsway Goldwyn Artichoke.
My Ladys Manor Farm in Monkton was named premier breeder of the open Holstein show, while Ehrhardt Farm and Gene Iager were the premier exhibitors.
Emervest Senzas Lilybug-ET, a 6-year-old cow exhibited by Donovan Hollingsworth, Kenlley Cook and Scott Youse of Denton, was awarded the senior and grand champion rosette in the open Jersey show. Exhibiting the reserve senior and reserve grand champion was Patrick Youse of Ridgely. The winning entry, a senior 3-year-old, was Milo Centurion Sassafras-ET.
Ehrhardt and Iager also exhibited the junior champion Jersey, Crossbrook Minister Charity, a spring yearling. Ernest Kueffner was the reserve junior champion honoree with Elliotts Tequila Seniorita-ET, a winter calf.
Katie Albaugh of Daysland Acres Farm in Walkersville swept the Milking Shorthorn open show. Daysland Acres Rum-EXP, a 5-year-old, was the senior and grand champion. Junior 3-year-old Daysland Acres Dina was the reserve senior and reserve grand champion winner.
Albaugh exhibited the junior champion Milking Shorthorn, Daysland Acres Logic CoCo, a spring yearling. She also had the reserve champion winner, Daysland Acres Logic Patty, a spring heifer calf.
The Red and White Holstein senior and grand champion winner was Harvue Contender Britta-Red, a junior 2-year-old exhibited by Kevin Ehrhardt, Ehrhardt Farms and Gene Iager of Baldwin. The reserve senior and reserve grand champion rosette was awarded to the senior 2-year-old entry by Chip Savage and Laura Emerson of Union Bridge, Rob-Sara Rustler Tina B-Red.
In addition to fall yearling Whitdale D Hvezda Sky-Red exhibited by Chris and Jen Hill, Richard Green and Chad Umbel of Thurmont taking junior champion honors in the open Red and White Holstein show, reserve junior champion honors went to Mike Heath and Kevin Dobroenie of Westminster for their winter calf entry, Carnol Redliner Kasypee-Red.
