Milk Production Up, Class III Price $18.22 in October

Milk production in the top 23 dairy states was up 1.1 percent in September compared with the same month a year earlier. Across the entire U.S., it was up 1 percent. In September, there were 9.21 million head of milking cows in the U.S., which was down slightly from the previous month’s 9.23 million head. As for production across the Northeast, Pennsylvania was up 1.5 percent; New York state up 1.8 percent and Vermont up 0.5 percent.
Also last week, USDA announced the October 2013 Class III price at $18.22 per hundredweight, which was up 8 cents from the previous month’s Class III price and down $2.80 from October 2012. The Class IV price was $20.17 per hundredweight, which was up 74 cents from September and up $1.72 from last year.
