The 36th annual Union County West End Fair Junior Livestock Sale featured 61 members of several Union County 4-H clubs and the Mifflinburg FFA chapter on Aug. 8 in Laurelton, Pa.
A total of 129 lots containing 12 steers, 67 market hogs, 36 market lambs, four dairy beef feeders, eight rabbit meat pens and two rabbit fryers were sold.
Sixty-three buyers supported the youths by purchasing animals. The sale grossed more than $107,000. Adam and Harold Fraley of Fraley’s Auctioneering of Muncy, Pa., donated their services.
The 1,365-pound grand champion market steer shown by Dawn Franck of Mifflinburg was purchased by Robert Hamm for Country Cupboard Restaurant of Lewisburg for $3.75 a pound.
The 1,350-pound reserve champion market steer shown by Hannah Imgrund of Lewisburg was purchased by Sue Iddings for Carriage Corner Restaurant and Iddings Quarry of Mifflinburg for $3.60 a pound.
The other steers were sold at an average price of $2.15 per pound, which was a record.
The 269-pound champion market hog shown by Ethan Bomgardner of Mifflinburg was purchased by Daryl Bomgardner of Hoober Inc., Mifflinburg Farmer Exchange and Bomgardner Shorthorn for $4 a pound.
The 284-pound reserve champion market hog shown by Dawn Franck of Mifflinburg was purchased by Diefenbach Construction for $3 a pound.
The average sale price for the other hogs was $2.48 per pound.
The 144-pound grand champion market lamb shown by Brittani Hook of Lewisburg was purchased by LeVere Hook of SteWan Farms for $9 a pound.
Hannah Imgrund of Lewisburg was the owner of the 138-pound reserve champion market lamb, which was bought by Dennis Keefer of the West Milton Bank for $7.50 a pound.
The average sale price for the nonchampion lambs was $3.95 per pound.
The 13-pound grand champion rabbit meat pen raised by Mason Smith of Lewisburg was bought by Dennis Keefer of West Milton State Bank of Mifflinburg for $35 a pound.
The 14-pound reserve champion rabbit pen raised by Evan Smith of Lewisburg was purchased by Douglas N. Wolfe Auctioneer Service of Millmont for $29 a pound.
The remaining pens of meat rabbits averaged $27.63 per pound.
The 780-pound grand champion dairy beef feeder steer raised by Shawna Franck of Mifflinburg was purchased by Mindi Ruhl of Mifflinburg Bank & Trust for $2.10 a pound.
The 635-pound reserve champion dairy feeder steer raised by Mason Smith of Mifflinburg was purchased by Len Hummel of Hoss’s Steak & Sea House for $2.20 a pound.
The remaining dairy beef feeder steers averaged $2.80 per pound.
Hannah Imgrund of Lewisburg sold her 74-pound grand champion market goat to A.A. Shaffer Insurance for $11.50 pound.
Brittani Hook of Lewisburg sold her 87-pound reserve champion market goat to Phil Trutt of Weis Markets for $8 a pound.
