New Holland Vegetable Day Set for Jan. 20

The New Holland Vegetable Day will be held 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Yoder’s Restaurant in New Holland and feature vegetable specialists from four states.

Joanne Whalen from The University of Delaware will discuss insect management in sweet corn and managing aphids in vegetable crops.

Judd Reid from New York will describe his experiences with controlling high tunnel diseases and planting living mulches between plastic rows in vegetables.

Andy Wyenandt from New Jersey will cover the issues of managing Phytophthora as well as bacterial diseases in tomatoes.

Kathy Demchak will talk about management of everbearing strawberries and issues with small fruit.

Emily Peifer will talk about bacterial problems in sweet onions.

Tom Childs from Twin Springs Fruit Farm in Adams County will describe his experiences using wood chips to heat his greenhouse.

Sinclair Adams will discuss the best of the 2013 Penn State flower trials.

Food Safety and the latest update from the Food Safety Modernization Act also will be covered.
