GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — This year's Nebraska State Fair is still two months away, but fair officials have already begun preparing for next year's event.
The Nebraska State Fair website has already been updated with some information for the 2014 fair, The Grand Island Independent reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/18KARQA ). That includes information on the opening day, which will be Aug. 22, and a new marathon race for 2014.
For this year's fair, which begins Aug. 23, people can pay for gate admission and buy tickets for events and concerts on the website.
The State Fair Board on Friday approved a number of improvements to fair facilities, including WiFi connection upgrades for the exhibition building, 4-H building and marketplace. That will help smartphones and tablets perform better at the Fairgrounds.
Footings also have been laid for the Nebraska Building, which will be completed for use in the 2014 fair, board member Tam Allen said. The $5.4 million building will have exhibition space on the ground floor and administrative offices on the second.
The building, which will be erected just inside the fair's main entrance, also will feature a museum of fair information and artifacts, as well as allow the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's return to the fair, McDermott said.
This year's State Fair will be the fifth held in Grand Island since the event moved from the state capital of Lincoln.
