RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Fisherman's Island on the Eastern Shore is closed for shellfish harvesting until mid-2014.

The Virginia Department of Health says the closure follows three cases of an illness associated with the eating of oysters harvested from the area.

The closure affects oysters and clams but not fin fish or crabs. It went into effect Friday and will remain in effect through July 11, 2014.

The department says shellfish will be monitored by the Division of Shellfish Sanitation to determine whether harvesting can resume sooner.

Some strains of the illness, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, can cause gastrointestinal illness in humans.
