SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (AP) — The sixth time turned out to be the charm for dairy industry magnate Jim Oberweis.
The Sugar Grove Republican was elected to the Illinois Senate on Tuesday after five failed runs for public office. Oberweis defeated Democratic challenger Corinne Pierog of St. Charles in the race for the 25th State Senate District. He'll fill the spot vacated by Republican Chris Lauzen, who's been elected Kane County Board chairman.
Oberweis has pumped millions of dollars into his campaigns over the past decade. He made his fortune running the dairy and ice cream company that bears his family name. He's also run an investment firm and mutual fund.
In the past, Oberweis campaigned unsuccessfully for Illinois governor, for Congress and for the U.S. Senate.
