PETERSBURG, Alaska (AP) — State fisheries officials are predicting a strong run of pink salmon in southeast Alaska next year.

KFSK reports (http://is.gd/WjbJbp) that the Alaska Fish and Game estimates the commercial catch at around 54 million pink salmon in 2013, which would put it in the fisheries managers' "excellent" category.

Pinks return in two-year cycles, with smaller returns in even years and larger returns in odd years.

Andy Piston with the department says next year's forecast is above the recent 10-year average but close to returns in recent odds years.

He says if the forecast holds, it should be a "really good season" for seine fishermen.
