SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois State Fair officials say repairs to the grandstand roof won't be done by the time the fair opens next week, but the grandstand will be safe.

Fair officials tell The (Springfield) State Journal-Register on Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1nWhbR4 ) that the grandstand will be open and safe for those attending concerts and car races. State fair spokesman Jeff Squibb says the grandstand "will be watertight and usable." He says there won't be "any rescheduling or displacement of events."

Squibb says it took longer than expected to order and receive metal sheeting. In May workers found wood debris from the roof had fallen into a section of seats. Work should be finished by Aug. 28 before Labor Day motorcycle races.

Repairs will cost nearly $260,000 and a Springfield roofer is doing the work.
