Have a ‘Distinctive’ Farm?
Deadline for Dairy of Distinction Award Is April 15
The Dairy of Distinction award continues to recognize outstanding dairy farms that have a pleasing appearance and meet milk quality requirements. The deadline for the program is April 15.
Dairy producers in the states of Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont can apply through their state coordinators. Information on the program can be found at the website dairyofdistinction.org.
The program supports the idea that attractive dairies enhance consumer confidence in the wholesomeness of milk and stimulate milk sales. A neat farm helps encourage public support for dairy farmers and the dairy industry. Each farm selected receives an 18-by-24-inch Dairy of Distinction sign to display.
Roadside judging for Pennsylvania will take place in May. Other states will schedule their evaluations this spring. Farms will be evaluated on factors that can be controlled by the dairy producer. Judges will look for clean and attractively finished buildings; neat landscaping, ditches, roads and lanes; and well-maintained fences. They also will take into account other aspects of the farm, such as manure management and cleanliness of animals.
For more information contact the local program representative or visit http://dairyofdistinction.org. The application has also appeared in past editions of Lancaster Farming.
