Md. Dairy Princess Diary: Springing into Spring

I enjoyed both the fresh, springtime weather and my role as Maryland Dairy Princess in March. I attended the Maryland Dairy Convention and the Maryland Holstein Convention; I know my brother liked the all-you-can-eat buffet dinner at the latter, especially the dessert line!

I also gave several presentations to local groups such as the Damascus Community 4-H Club, where I taught them how to make cheddar cheese corn bread and told them about the many nutritional benefits of dairy products, and the audience at the Montgomery/Frederick/Howard County public speaking event, where I gave a radio spot about eating 3-Every-Day of dairy.

Obviously, with the warmer weather and spring sports really getting rolling, I have been thinking more about refueling with milk after I play. (Chocolate milk is my favorite!). Wishing everyone a happy spring and enjoy your dairy!

Here’s a quick and refreshing springtime recipe I love that, of course, features dairy.

Old Fashioned Strawberry Soda

1 cup 2% milk

1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries

1/2 cup vanilla ice cream, softened

2 tablespoons sugar

2 to 3 drops red food coloring, optional

1 cup ginger ale, chilled

In a blender, combine the milk, strawberries, ice cream, sugar and food coloring if desired; cover and process until smooth. Pour into chilled glasses. Add ginger ale and serve immediately. Yield: 2 servings.

Does milk have a lot of untapped potential in today’s competitive beverage market?
