Hannah Sue Burnett of The Plains, Va. and Harbour Light maintained their lead through all three phases of the Dansko-Fair Hill International CCI 3-star event to win the national championship at the weekend.
Burnett and Jacqueline Mars' Harbour Light established an early lead in dressage just ahead of Marilyn Little of Frederick, Md. and Raylyn Farms' Wurrtemberg. The event, held on its traditional course in Fair Hill, Md. Thursday through Sunday, became a race between Burnett and Little who kept their 1-2 positions throughout.
Burnett and Harbour Light had double clear rounds in the cross country and stadium jumping phases to win by nine points.
Little and Wurrtemberg had 3.6 penalty time points in the cross country and a rail down in the stadium jumping phases.
Olympian Phillip Dutton of West Grove, Pa. and Team Rebecca's Fernhill Eagle placed third.
In a division full of Olympic riders and other experienced super stars, the CCI 2-star competition produced a surprise finish when 19-year-old Connor Husain of Great Falls, Va. and his family's Piece of Hope came up from fifth place in the dressage into second with a clear cross country round and jumped a double clear in stadium to win the division.
Second was Clayton Fredericks of Australia and Hayley and Pat Parker's Pigrela Des Cabanes.
Third was Jennie Brannigan of West Grove, Pa. and Nina Gardner's Indie, who had been leading after the cross country but dropped a rail in the stadium.
