MEYERSDALE, Pa. — Somerset County celebrated its agriculture heritage Aug. 17-24 at the 113th annual Somerset County Fair in Meyersdale.

According to Jeffrey Romersberg, fair president, attendance was strong at around 22,000 patrons for the week, despite two heavy rain days.

The 4-H exhibits focused on the theme of “Agriculture: Reflections on the past and focusing on the future.” Elaborate displays provided by Buffalo Creek 4-H, Dairy Dells 4-H, Milk Squirts 4-H and the Somerset County 4-H Dairy Club.

Included in the exhibits was a honeybee display put together by Yvonne Durst, a Fort Hill, Pa., beekeeper with multiple colonies. The display included a demonstration hive where fairgoers could see a live bee colony under glass.

“I enjoying talking about the ins and outs of beekeeping to fair attendees, as well as honey production, and I’ve been surprised about the interest in bees,” Durst said.

Fair royalty also changed with the retirement of 2012 Fair Queen Ashley May and the installation of 2013 Queen Kristen Ohler.
