Tremendous Tater

Delmer Simcox of Port Deposit, Md., was surprised when he dug this mammoth spud from his garden sweet potato crop earlier this month. He had several sweet potatoes weighing 5 to 6 pounds, but the real shocker was this 14-inch-long tater weighing in at 8.5 pounds. As impressive as that is, consider this: According to Guiness World Records, a spud in Spain set the world record in 2004 as the heaviest sweet potato ever, weighing in at 81 pounds, 9 ounces.
