BEDFORD, Pa. — Last week as Guernsey breeders turned their focus on Bedford, excitement in the sale barns was high as several unique opportunities were available for purchase.

In addition to the pick of the Snider Homestead heifer barn, several Canadian-bred Guernseys crossed the auction block for the first time since 2003.

Topping the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders’ Association’s Blue Halter Sale was Flemmingdale Sunrise Vanity from Christopher Flemming of Union Springs, N.Y. Daniel St. Pierre of Berwick, Maine purchased the heifer for $13,300.

Vanity was the junior champion at this month’s New York Spring Carousel Show in addition to being the 2007 Reserve All-American Spring Calf.

Snider Homestead’s offering of the pick of their heifer barn sold for $11,000. The bid was made by Brandon Grewe and Dan Lakey of Wisconsin.

Rounding out the sale toppers was Canadian-born Maplehurst Skipper Brooke from Ken Foster of Lynden, Ontario. The heifer was sold in the Guernsey Gold program, but still generated a bid of $7,900. Eric Showalter of Cambridge, Ohio purchased the heifer that boasts a leading PA LPI Index, a Canadian performance index.

The Guernsey Gold program is open only to junior Guernsey members. A portion of the sale money from the heifers is placed into a pot. The top four 2-year-old production record winners of the Guernsey Gold heifers will split the fund.

“This sale has a long history of taking quality Guernseys and putting them back into the industry,” said Dave Smith about the sale.

The sale averaged $3,308 for the 47 cows, heifers and calves.

Before the sale, the Guyer family presented two $500 checks for the purchase of a Guernsey youth project. The award is given in memory of David Guyer.

This year’s winners were Shelby Hawkins and Samantha Klinger.

At the association’s banquet, Lindenhof Agni Beatrice, bred by Lindenhof Farm of Kirkwood, Pa., was honored as the Guernsey All-Time National Milk Producer. Dick Linde accepted the award.

Bernetta Gable reflected on the impact of the Lindenhof Farm on the Guernsey Breed through the farm’s quality cattle. She also noted that the farm had countless cover shots for the national breed magazine.

At the junior breakfast, Marilyn Hill was honored as the Albert Hack Service Award winner. Hill, a former Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders Association president and president of the Mercer-Northwest Guernsey Breeders, was recognized for her dedication to Guernsey youth. Junior Director Melissa Kohler said, “For the 20 years I have know Marilyn, she has dedicated herself to everyone interested in Guernseys.”

Hill has been a strong supporter of the youth in her district, traveling to each dairy show to take a photo, even if only one Guernsey is shown. She organizes a slide show at the Mercer-Northwest annual meeting of the youth pictures. She also helps out with the youth craft auction and Ag Progress Days milkshake stand.

The Outstanding Guernsey Boy award was presented to Kyle Sollenberger and the Outstanding Guernsey Girl was Cassie Musser.

Because of a tight contest, the final junior quiz bowl teams were not selected. A second round of competition will take place in a month to finalize the junior and senior teams that will travel to the National Convention.
