New York Spring Junior Holstein Show
One hundred and twenty-three Holsteins were judged by Lynn Harbaugh of Pine River, Wisc. during the New York Spring Junior Holstein Show, which kicked off the 2008 Spring Dairy Carousel! Liddleholm Advat Roxett-Et, the first place Spring Yearling Heifer, was named Junior Champion by Judge Harbaugh. The Junior Champion is owned and exhibited by Anthony Liddle, N.Y. The Reserve Junior Champion went to B & L Dundee Laneeka, the first place Fall Yearling, owned and exhibited by Jesse Byma, N.Y.
Judge Harbaugh lead out his first placed Aged Cow and first and second placed 5 year olds for his selection of Senior Champion of the New York Spring Junior Holstein Show. Harbaugh picked the entry of Patrick Smithgall and the first place Aged Cow, Old-Acres Farm White Locust, as his Senior Champion followed by the first place 5 year old Elm-Spring Integrity Inez, owned and exhibited by Emily Tudor, N.Y. Honorable Mention went to the second place 5 year old Autumn-Ridge Durham Milly, owned and exhibited by Patrick Lundy.
The Best Bred and Owned by Exhibitor under two years of age went to Winter Yearling, B&L Distrigene Phoebe, owned by Jesse Byma, N.Y. B&L Rubens-RC Phantasty, the Junior 3 year old also owned by Jesse Byma, received the Best Owned and Bred by Exhibitor over 2 years of age. Cyrus Conard of Ridgedale Farm, Sharon Springs, N.Y. was named Premier Exhibitor of the Junior Show.
New York Spring Ayrshire Show
"Nice class, a really great pair to start this class" said VanExel, regarding the Fall heifer calf class. Winning that class was Fol-Ayr L P Miss Salsa, the entry of Carl Foland and Jim Perotti of New York. VanExel went on to judge 54 during the New York Spring Ayrshire Show in Syracuse.
During the selection of junior champion of the open show Judge VanExel stated that the cattle presented before him were " really nice Ayrshires heifers and he applauded the breeders for their quality." He then went to award Junior and Reserve Junior Champion to the pair of Senior calves; Fol-Ayr L P Miss Salsa, owned by Carl Foland and Jim Perotti, NY and Magic Meadows BBBK Alexus owned by Rachel Vail and Brittney Hill, MA. Judge VanExel stated this pair of calves "in the future will be beautiful yearlings."
"I just love the good quality of Ayrshire cattle and its rather obvious to me she's one of the best Ayrshire cows I've seen in a long time. She has a lot of future" said Judge VanExcel as he named Legacy Lane Jamboree owned by Zachary Woodis, Grand Champion of the Open Ayrshire show. Jamboree is the first place 5 year old, followed by the second place 5 year old, Four-Hills Clinton Lucy for Reserve Grand Champion. Lucy is owned by Kevin Hill of Vermont.
Best Bred and Owned under 2 years of age in the open show went to the Junior Champion, Fol-Ayr L P Miss Salsa with the Grand Champion cow, Legacy Lane Jamboree, taking the Best Bred and Owned over 2 years of age and Best Udder of the show.
Jeffery Atherton, Jackson Hill Farm, Greenwood, N.Y. took home the banners for Premier Breeder and Exhibitor.
New York Brown Swiss Show
Steve White pulled out three heifers for Junior Champion. He stated "these three fit my pattern in the Brown Swiss Show" as he picked Random Luck T Tabitha-ET the first place fall yearling heifer, Junior Champion of the New York Brown Swiss open show. The Junior Champion animal is owned by Glad Ray Farm, Kathy Whitman and C&J Hill. White then named Dublin-Hills Hildee as Reverse Junior Champion the first place Spring yearling heifer and the entry of Lauren Osborn, NY. Judge Steve White judged 85 Brown Swiss during the 2008 New York Brown Swiss Show at the Spring Dairy Carousel.
White started his reason with "these four cows with tight udders are big strong cows. The five year old has tremendous rib structure and the aged cow is very much like the five year old with strength, power and dairyness." He then chose the five year old as his Grand Champion, Forest Lawn Anthem Busy, with Siegerts Flip Twister the aged cow as Reserve Grand. Both champion cows are owned by Ken Main and Peter Vail of Elite Dairy, N.Y.
Best bred and owned under two years of age went to the entry of Nudge Syndicate, Miss Nudges Nissy, the first place fall heifer calf and West-Hope Champion Mystic, the four year old of West Fint, VA. "Thank you to the Brown Swiss Association and Brown Swiss Breeders of New York for asking me to do this show" said Steve White.
Elite Dairy LLC, Copake, N.Y. were awarded the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners.
Milking Shorthorn
Hank VanExel finished the day out by judging the forty seven Milking Shorthorns. Junior Champion of the open Milking Shorthorn show went to the entry of Doug Wherry and Keith Van Camp, Ontario, Canada with Cedar creek Logic Skylight 17 AR. Skylight was the first place Fall heifer calf. Reserve Junior Champion went to entry number 22 the first place fall yearling; GMC Logic Lilac owned and exhibited by Lindsey Clark and Doug Wherry, N.H.
VanExel chose Innisfail RU Lady as the Grand Champion of the Milking Shorthorn show. Lady is the Junior 3 year old of Michelle Ritschard, NY. Judge VanExel made his first place 4 year old Reserve Grand Champion; hardcore Idaho Helen is owned and exhibited by Aryn Arabaugh of Maryland.
Best Bred and owned animal under two years of age went to the Reserve Junior Champion, GMC Logic Lilac the entry of Lindsey Clark and Doug Wherry, N.H. The Reserve Grand Champion 4 year old cow; Hardcore Idaho Helen was named best bred and owned over two years of age. Helen is owned by Aryn Arabaugh, Md.
GMC Farm of Cornish Flat, N.H. received the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners of the Milking Shorthorn Show.
International Spring Holstein Show
Nearly 300 Registered Holstein cattle took part in the International Spring Holstein Show held during the 2008 Dairy Carousel. The show judged by Hank VanExel of Lodi, Calif. was held Monday, April 14, 2008, the last of seven shows which wrapped up the Carousel in grand style.
Savage-Leigh Bradely Holi, the first place winter yearling heifer took the ribbon home as Junior Champion of the open show. She is the entry of Kelli Savage of Maryland following with the second place winter yearling, Tramilda Dundee Radiance, as Reserve Junior Champion. Radiance is owned and exhibited by Peyton Yeoman and Kalli Keen.
Winning the intermediate championship was the first and second place Senior 2 year olds. Intermediate Champion to Kingsmill Durham Ava-ET owned and exhibited by Kingsmill Farm II, NC and Reserve Intermediate Champion going to Windy-Knoll-View Classy-ET owned by James and Nina Burdette, Pa.
"As for Senior Champion we have a hellva group to chose from" said Judge VanExel "for my senior championship she has everything I want; dairy character, strength and udder." "If you take out your 5 year old, this is going to be my senior champion" VanExel continued. Bingland Leduc Nancy owned by Elmvue Farm, N.Y. the first place 5 year old become Senior and Grand Champion of the 2008 International Spring Holstein Show with KY-Blue Rubens Marla-Red owned by Richard Green, DE was selected Reserve Senior and Grand Champion.
Savage-Leigh of Knoxville, Maryland was awarded the Premier Breeder banner and Cowtown Holsteins, Derby Line, Vt. was presented the banner for Premier Exhibitor.
"It's a honor to judge this, as its one of the top 2 to 3 shows in the country. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for this opportunity" Hank VanExel said just as he finished judging the show. He went on to explain "I have an associate judge (Dan Menendez) today and I appreciate him and my ringman (Charlie McEvoy) and he is the best you can get."
The 2008 Spring Dairy Carousel is "a great event" said announcer Syd McEvoy. There were a total of 483 different exhibitors and 904 entries at this years show. The quality of sales and shows were outstanding this year.
International Spring Guernsey Show
The International Spring Guernsey Show was held in conjunction with the Spring Dairy Carousel. Sixty-three Guernseys were presented in front of Judge Steve White of New Castle, Ind.
Judge White continued the show by naming his Junior and Grand Champions of the International Show. White pulled selected his first and second place Spring Yearling heifers for Junior and Reserve Junior Champion of the open show. Flemingdale Sunrise Vanity owned by Christopher Fleming, N.Y . was named Jr. Champion with Connor Littlefield Sutton's, N.Y., second place Spring Yearling heifer, Littlefields Skipper Surprise, being named Reserve Jr. Champion.
"Great feet and legs and udder" said White about his choice for Grand Champion he then went on to grant the Reserve Champion an "advantage of symmetry of udder." Morey Miller of Granby, Conn. first place 4 year old, Millborne Tiller Fancy, walked away with the honor of Grand Champion of the International Spring Guernsey Show with Miller's Senior 2 year old, Millborne Tiller Julia May, taking Reserve Grand Champion.
Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Spring International Guernsey Show went to Littlefield Farms of Watertown, N.Y.
New York Spring Jersey Show
"In my experience in the dairy business these are the heifers that make cows" said Judge Steve White from New Castle, Ind. as he selected his Junior Champion and Reserve Junior Champion. Judge White looked over 145 Jerseys and pulled out Santanas Ringmaster Surprise, the entry of Ernest Kueffner and Terri Packard, Md. for his Junior Champion and followed with his second place Fall Yearling HC Socrates Juliet owned and exhibited by Jessica Currie, N.Y.
Later that morning, White made his selection for Intermediate Champion of the Jersey Show. His choice, the first place Senior 3 year old, Rock Ella Giller JGB Belering, the entry of Brett Wolker and Nathan Thomas followed by Arethusa Veronica's Prancer-ET, the first place Senior 2 year old owned by Arethusa Farm. White commented in his reasons these two cows had "full udders with teats properly placed under these udders."
Three cows were brought out in contention for Senior Champion of the Jersey show as Judge White described each cow and stated "how much alike" they were. His ultimate decision was to give the championship to the first placed 100,000 pound cow, Huronia Centurion Veronica. Veronica is owned by Arethusa Farm, Conn. Reserve was given to the first place aged cow Pleasant Valley Prime Heather owned by Mike Heath, Md.
Arethusa Farm of Litchfield, Conn. was named Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the New York Spring Jersey Show.
New York Red & White Show
Lynn Harbaugh of Pine River, Wisc. judged 96 Red and White Holsteins during the Spring Dairy Carousel.
"A tall, long heifer" said Judge Harbaugh about Medo-Lawn INF Cherry-Red-ET the first place Winter Yearling and his selection for Junior Champion of the Open Red and White Show. Cherry is owned by C&J Hill, C&S Umbel and J&S Keilholtz, Md. Harbaugh followed with the first place Fall Yearling Heifer, Oscroft Inferno Champagne-Red the entry of Richard Green, Del. for Reserve Junior Champion.
When selecting his top animals for the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion of the Open Red and White show, Judge Harbaugh stated the first place 4 year old was "so extreme in her dairyness" and has a "beautifully balanced, well attached udder" and for these reason Harbaugh selected the four year old followed by the Aged Cow as his champions. Grand Champion went to KY-Blue Ruben Marla-Red-ET and Reserve Grand Champion was the Aged Cow, Greenlea Rub Marlene-Red-ET. Both cows are owned by Richard Green of Delaware.
The Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners of the New York Red and White Show were presented to Richard Green of Middletown, Delaware.
