Pa. Dairy Princesses Prepare for Pageant

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and Promotion Services, Inc. will hold its 52nd annual dairy princess pageant Sept. 20 at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center. A milk punch reception will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by a banquet at 6:30 p.m. and the coronation to follow at 8 p.m.
Twenty-six county dairy princesses will compete for the title of Pennsylvania Dairy Princess now held by Lyndsey Royek of Erie County. The newly selected princess and two alternates will reign for a period of one year from now through September 2009. During that time, the princess and alternates will represent the dairy farmers of Pennsylvania speaking out for its number one agricultural industry and all dairy products.
The pageant will conclude the All-American Dairy Show, which is celebrating it’s 45th year. The pageant is held after two full days of activities and interviews for the contestants. The contestants are judged on a personal interview, a 3-5 minute speech for an adult audience, a 3-5 minute school presentation and a scrapbook. Four out-of-state judges, two men and two women, will select seven finalists who will answer an impromptu question on stage. The judges will tally scores to select the state princess and two alternates from the finalists.
The Pennsylvania Dairy Princess program is supported by the Pennsylvania dairy farmers through advertising and promotion agencies: the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, Mid Atlantic Dairy Association, American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc. and Allied Milk Producers’ Cooperative, Inc. Contributions from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Pa. Dairymen’s Association and other dairy-related organizations and individuals also support the program. This year, Select Sire Power, Inc. is sponsoring the $1,500 award given to the Pennsylvania dairy princess and Ag Choice Farm Credit is sponsoring the $600 awards given to each of the two alternates.
In addition, two contestants will receive $100 awards for outstanding dairy presentations designed for school children and two contestants will receive $100 each for the best speeches designed for adult audiences. Two $100 awards will be awarded to contestants who compile the best scrapbooks, which chronicle their dairy princess activities to date. The scrapbook and speech awards are sponsored by ABS Global. The contestants themselves will select the coveted “Miss Congeniality” award from among their own ranks. The congeniality award is sponsored by the Horace Prange Memorial Fund.
For more than 50 years, the primary purpose of the dairy princess program in Pennsylvania is the promotion of the dairy industry and its products at the grass roots level and furthering consumers understanding of the importance of agriculture to the state’s economy. Incentive awards will be given to county dairy princesses with the committees they represent that have completed incentive requirements.
In addition, an individual award of $300 will be given to the young woman who stood out as the outstanding dairy promoter during her county reign. This award, the “Tina Shultz Memorial Award,” is given in memory and honor of the outstanding young lady who in May 1986 succumbed to cancer during her reign as Huntingdon County dairy princess.
The Friday speech competition is open to the public free of charge. It will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Radisson Governor’s Ballroom B. The Saturday presentation competition will also be open to public free of charge. It will run from 8 a.m. until noon in the Radisson Ballroom.
