Jersey Breaks Historic Tie to Become Farm Show Supreme

HARRISBURG, Pa. — In one of the closest decisions in Farm Show history, Reich-Dale Sambo Sage-ET, the grand champion Jersey, was selected as the 2007 Farm Show’s supreme champion. This decision came after the three show judges, Justin Burdette, Janet Stiles and Laurie Winkelman scored a three-way tie, a Farm Show first.
“What we tried to do is think which cow had the least amount of faults and which cow could stand the most competition in her own breed,” said Judge Janet Stiles. “That Jersey just doesn’t have any holes you want to pick in her.”
The initial tie resulted in the supreme champion voting system at the Farm Show. Each judge evaluates the four other champions they did not select in breed show competition. Each judge then ranks the four cows and the scores are tabulated. After the tie was announced, the judges convened to select a champion. Stiles, who judged the Jersey show earlier in the day, said the Jersey showed an advantage with her high and wide rear udder and a strong fore udder.
In the breed competition, Stiles said the Jersey was a “pretty handy” winner bringing everything she looks for in a cow together.
Sage is owned by Curtis and Autumn Reichard of Chambersburg. Past wins include winning her class at the 2005 Farm Show and placing seventh at the All-American Jersey Show in Louisville, Ky. Her projected 305-day record included 19,000 pounds milk, 820 pounds fat, and 530 pounds protein.
Curtis said this was a great win and that there will be “a lot of celebration in the barns” after her selection on the tanbark. While missing an All-American nomination by one placing this year, he said the family will have to “wait and see about next year” as far as reapplying.
Earning an honorable mention was the Holstein champion C-Cove-NV Reflect Lexus-ET exhibited by Cessna Brothers of Clearville.
Other breed champions included, Ayrshire, Plum Bottom Trident’s Paris exhibited by Jason Mowry, Roaring Spring; Brown Swiss, Windsor Manor Brittany exhibited by Jenna Smith, Martinsburg; Guernsey, Ripley Farms MM Queenette-ET exhibited by Kendy Gable of Snider Homestead Farm, New Enterprise; and Milking Shorthorn, Hard Core Othello Rozella exhibited by Hard Core Farm, New Enterprise.
