This week, Emma Cunniff from Kneehigh Farm in Chester County, Pennsylvania, is reveling in the recent snowfall. She explains the benefit that a good snow pack can have on soil, creating an insulating blanket which encourages growth of winter crops and cover crops. Snow also traps nitrogen from the atmosphere and adds some nutrients to the soil.

But the weight of snow can cause a certain level of anxiety for greenhouse and high tunnel growers, so Cunniff recommends vigilance during a snowfall and removing the snow from the structures as it accumulates to avoid damage or collapse.

Cunniff hopes to be planting seeds in her greenhouse in the next week or so. Stay tuned.
