HARRISBURG, Pa. — It was a day of firsts for Jonathan Lamb and Chris Lang.

Lamb’s Oakfield WB Tiffany-ET was named supreme champion cow and Lang’s Springhill Jokes Finale-ETV was crowned supreme heifer on Sept. 18 at the All-American Dairy Show.

Both cows have wins at other major shows, but neither owner had claimed a supreme before.

“She’s one of our best cows,” said Lamb, who showed at the All-American for the first time in 10 years.

Lamb credited his wife, Alicia, as well as farm employees Andrew Lenhart and Jamie Black for their year-round work with Tiffany, a 4-year-old Holstein.

The farm has six sites in New York and Ohio. Lamb and his younger brother, Matthew, manage the cows, while Jim Veazey and his daughter, Janette, handle the crops.

Oakfield Corners Dairy in Oakfield, New York, is Tiffany’s home and the show division of the business.

It’s a 1,300-head operation, but Tiffany shares her pen with just one other cow. She is fed corn silage, hay and a special grain formulation.

Tiffany’s qualities include a strong mammary system, strong ideal of breed character, and good feet and legs.

“I’m really proud of the hard work that went in, and proud of the cow,” Lamb said.

Finale, the supreme heifer, has some of the same selling points — solid structure, good feet and legs, a nice blend of dairyness and strength.

“We are very excited,” Lang said. “Just never had a heifer named supreme before.”

Finale lives at Springhill Farm in Holmes County, Ohio.

The 200-year-old farm milks 75 Holsteins and Guernseys. The award-winning Guernsey heifer has a box stall, grain and free-choice hay. Lang has been watching her ration more closely lately because Finale is due to calve in March.

Lang didn’t get to see Finale be named supreme champion, having headed home early to do chores.

Still, All-American is one of Lang’s favorite shows.

“It doesn’t break the bank. It’s an exhibitor-friendly show,” he said.

Springhill has been sending cattle to the Harrisburg show since the mid-1980s, but its participation has been inconsistent because of the six-hour drive from Ohio.

The owners of both supreme champion cattle are taking their winners to the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, next week.
