A hemp drying plant in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, has been ordered to stop production because of bad odors.
On Monday, the state Department of Environmental Protection said Patriot Shield Pennsylvania must cease operations within 48 hours.
The agency sent the company notices of violation on Oct. 7 and Nov. 1 based on inspections that were triggered by numerous complaints.
DEP said an air-cleaning scrubber and a diesel generator that ran the forced-air dryer were installed and operated without state approval. The company must fill out paperwork before it can resume operations.
Patriot Shield is not allowed to accept hemp deliveries at the site until it comes into compliance, but the company has not been fined.
