Lancaster Weekly Cattle Summary for week ending Friday, January 6, 2017.

CATTLE: 2439; Last week 1865; Last year 2242. CALVES: 1732; Last week  1541; Last year 2036.

This week in Lancaster County, the slaughter steer market tried to correct itself from the holiday chaos caused by short supply and aggressive ethnic buyers. Slaughter steers traded mixed from 10.00 lower to 3.00 higher for the week. Heavier supplies and less ethnic activity caused the volatile market. Demand was moderate as packers get beyond the holiday shortages. Choice Box Beef was down slightly this week. Choice Cutouts were quoted at 201.55/cwt Thursday afternoon, 1.92 lower than last week's Thursday close. The slaughter cow market advanced again this week with cows trading steady to 4.00 higher. Supplies were heavier this week but prices remained strong. Demand was good. The first Feeder cattle of the new year will be January 13th at Vintage. Holstein bull calves mixed from 5.00 lower to 10.00 higher for the week. Holstein heifer calves sold steady for the week. Demand was moderate. The Dairy sale was not reported last week so there were no comparisons. All cattle are sold per cwt.
